Second Life... AHH

After viewing Orientation in Second life, I am sorry to say that I am still a little hesitant to dive into virtual worlds. I am currently drowning in technology, and the thought of creating Avatars and 3D platforms, as seen in the video, terrifies me. Check this video out if you are tech savvy, unlike me!

High Quality Wikis

Before watching Parallel Play or Collaboration, i didn't really know much about wiki's or how students could use them. This video was very informative, It explores the difference between simply throwing a wiki together, and really creating something original, structured, and elaborate.

Sam has Skills!

Sam's Digital Youth Portrait shows yet ANOTHER example of a student who has used technology to their benefit. While is on the computer A LOT, she still seems to be pretty well rounded.

The Bluest Eye

I did my voicethread over Toni Morison's book, The Bluest Eye. This is my favorite book!

Google Form!

I created a Google Form that asked a couple of questions about people's taste in music. I LOVE music (who doesn't) and I enjoyed reading the responses to my survey! It seems like, from what I have read, the first concert is always the best! Music is tied to so many memories and relationships! It is such a telling part of our lives!

My very own screencast!

Hello! This is my instructional screencast! This semester, I learned how to embed a video onto my blog, so I can share it with friends! I hope this video will help you learn to do the same!

Something Cool

Hi Everyone! I just watched the coolest video about a technology buff named Luis!
Check it Out!

Not Alone

Kelly's video on Obesity openened my eyes to an issue I've never really thought about- obesity is often handled alone. It is strange that obesity is an obvious problem, but it is something that we try to hide and take care of all by ourselves. So many people suufer from obesity, and we should find accountability partners ans seek help from one another. Awesome video!

(The embed code can be seen in the Edit html tab, and I used the correct code from the website, but it is not showing up. I've done it on ever other blog reflection, and I tried many times to make sure it wasn't my error)

Luis the 21st

I enjoyed watching Luis' Digital Youth Portrait . I thought the most interesting part of the video was that Luis was able to use technology to bridge the cultural gap between himself and his mother. He helped her watch some of her favorite hispanic soap operas using you tube! This exemplifies the universality of technology.

Buddy System

Blogging Buddies really made me think. Why shouldn't students from other schools be able to communicate?
I never before saw typing as a tool for literacy. That makes so much sense because, as students guess a word's spelling, the computer can help them along. The computer can teach them about capital letters and punctuation. WOW
I remember when I was in the second grade, my teacher assigned us "Pen Pals" with another class. I could NOT wait to recieve my letter every week. Blogging Buddies revolutionizes the Pen Pal system.

Cameron Can!

I really enjoyed Cameron's Digital Youth Portrait. This was probably my favorite video we've watched (I'm working backwords, so I've seen quite a few). It is truly amazing how much Cameron has learned . One smart little boy.

-But-

It seems to me that wealth had a lot to do with his advancement. Maybe I'd be as Tech Savvy if I had a lap top-like little game when I was 4 years old,or a Green Screen and a Mac in the 6th grade! The parents seem so proud of him, and they should be. I'm really not trying to be too critical. He's a talented kid, I just think he has a view advantages.

21rst Century Blackboard

WOw! Watching A Peek for a Week really opened my eyes to the possibilities and capabilities of children. I never would have thought that a six year old could so easily use computers for learning. I knew that there were many computer games that children played without realizing they were actually learning, but I had no idea a little girl in pig tails could be busy blogging!! I am 20, and I just learned how to blog!

A Portrait of Progress

I was surprised and impressed by The Digital Youth Portrait for Nafiza. Nafiza is so incredibly advanced that technology has become second nature in her life. I am the polar opposite of Nafiza. I just started utilizing something called "speaker phone" about a week ago!! I wish that was an exaggeration.

This video inspired me, and the main thing I took away from it is that technology is a tool not a technique of torture. Technology can actually help make things easier :O . My reaction to new computer programs or right- clicking tricks is always " ahh, confusing! I'll just do it the way I've always done it... that's easier". I now know that my mindset could not be further from the truth. I am making things 10 times harder by not embracing technology as Nafiza has.

When I finally become a teacher, I want to instill in my students that technology is something we are all lucky to have. I want them to know that it is something created to progress and better our lives.

Why I want to be a Teacher

Hello. My name is Laken Slate. I am 20 years old, a Sophomore, an Early Childhood Education Major, and a bit confused at the moment. I'm just getting into my teaching courses, and it is a tad overwhelming. I want to be a teacher, specifically for younger kids, because I love how they always seem to exceed everyone's expectations. I think children are often underestimated, and any time I have had the chance to work with children, they always have a way of approaching things in the simplest ( but, some how, most brilliant) of terms. I can't to witness a new surprise everyday.
